DJ, supported by EDAW AECOM, was appointed by the Commission for the New Economy and Manchester City Council to explore the feasibility of substantially increasing the installation of green roofs on new and existing buildings across Greater Manchester.
The principal driver behind the study has been to ensure a conurbation that is resilient to the impacts of climate change and a model of low-carbon economic transition, whilst affording excellent quality of life and environmental benefits.
The three part study included a strategic analysis of the barriers and opportunities for green roof delivery across Greater Manchester, the completion of five building-specific feasibility studies for green roof retrofits, and the production of Green Roof Guidance for policy-makers, developers and building owners.
DJ advised public authorities and property owners on the public, environmental and commercial benefits of green roofs and the measures needed to overcome impediments to their delivery. A conurbation-wide work programme was established to drive awareness, build delivery capacity and to coordinate funding opportunities.
